Public artwork, from sculptures to mural displays large and small, have gained a lot of steam here in the Tampa Bay area. On the Pinellas County side, murals can be found in the smaller, northern communities like Dunedin and Safety Harbor, all the way down to the City of St. Petersburg, home of an annual mural festival called, SHINE.

In fact, here in Dunedin, murals have been part of the community for some time. For example, the Murals for Mutts “Welcome to Dogedin” mural, originated back in 2010 and remains an area of awe for both local and visiting animal lovers.

Throughout Dunedin, more and more murals continue to pop up. This past spring, our sister restaurant, Café Alfresco, explored 10 of Dunedin’s vibrant murals on their blog. Since then, even more murals have been added across town.

This latest wave of murals is the brainchild of the Downtown Dunedin Merchants Association (DDMA), as part of a campaign to inspire creativity, support local artists and stimulate the local economy. The initiative includes eight murals and three works on canvas sprinkled throughout the downtown core, including a mural located at Bon Appétit Restaurant!

Walking towards the restaurant front entrance, the eye is drawn to a bright sun, pink clouds, and blue hues set just to the right of the restaurant. When the mural is in full focus, it showcases a beautiful waterfront setting, complete with palm trees, a colorful sunset and jumping dolphin. The scene, designed and painted by local Dunedin muralist, Gary Baillie, compliments the relaxed coastal vibes of both the restaurant and the town perfectly.

As we mentioned earlier, Bon Appétit’s mural is just one of eight around town. Each is created by a different artist, for a different business, with a different theme. You will definitely want to visit them all!
